Tutorials - VST effects

VST effects are software plugins such as reverb, delay, chorus and flanger that require a VST compatible host run. energyXT2 supports audio and MIDI VST plugins. Hundreds of free and commercial VST plugins are avilable on the internet. KvR Audio is great resource to VST plugins, check it out.

Setting up the root folder for your VST effects

In the main menu, select File > Setup, or press F6 to open the setup window. In setup, select Folders, then click on the Plugins section.

Finally, click the Add button, and select the root folder where you have stored your VST effects on disk. In our example, the VST effects are stored in c:\audio\fx

After your VST folder is setup properly, you will find all your VST's in the plugins section in the browser.

Adding VST effects to your project

Adding VST effects is as simple as click and drag from the browser into the mixer. Either open the main mixer (press F9) or open the mixer strip inside the sequencer. To do this, select "Show mixer strip" from the Options menu in the sequencer. This is shown in picture below.

A mixer strip has 2 effect sections. The topmost section is for Send effects and the lower section is for Insert effects. Insert effects are applied per channel, while Send effects can be shared by all mixer channels in the project. Reverb and delay are often used as send effects, and since they are shared you will save valuable CPU cycles over loading them into each channel.

Showing the VST effect editor

To open the VST effect editor, just double-click on the VST name in the mixer.

In our example we have used some great sounding VST effect plugins from Kjaerhus Audio.

The parameters of the VST effects can be recorded from within the sequencer, and even controlled from an external MIDI device in real-time using the new Controller map in energyXT2.

Note that the more VST effects you keep adding to your project, the more you will strain your CPU, and you may eventually run out of processing power. energyXT2 has a really cool feature that will automatically bypass effects when not processing any audio. This will save a lot of CPU. In addition, you can freeze tracks in the sequencer.
