Tutorials - Classic Arp

The arpeggiator will step through the sequence of notes you have pressed down on your MIDI keyboard (or are playing back from a MIDI track), and play them back in sync with the tempo of the song.

Arpeggio's works great for anything from basslines, to chords and background melody lines, and are often played live from a MIDI keyboard. The arpeggiator in energyXT is available on MIDI tracks in the sequencer, as well as a Classic Arp component in the Comps view.

Here's an example of a bass played back in random mode bass arpeggio

The features

Mode - sets the sequence of notes being played back. Select between 9 different modes ranging from As played to random. By default, the arpeggiator will cycle thru the notes in the same order as it receives notes.

Step - sets the playback speed of the arpeggiator. Default is 16th notes and the arpeggiator will play in sync with the tempo of the sequencer.

Prob. - probability gives you the control of how likely a step (note) is being played back. At 100% all steps are being played back. At 50%, upto half of the step are being skipped on playback, thus generating a rest. Use this settings for random variations of the current arpeggiator mode.

Gate - sets the note length of each step. The gate can be mapped to MIDI CC for real-time variation of the note length, and you can set a random note length for a more groovy playback as well.

Shuffle - adds a suspension-release effect to the playback. Also called Swing, this effect adds a nice groovish feel to the arpeggio.

Rnd.velo - random velocity works per step by assigning a different velocity value to each note being played back. If you route the arpeggiator to a VST instrument that has the option to map velocity to volume, pan or even filter cutoff, this can create really nice variations of the playback. Sit back listen!

Arpeggiator programs

From the program menu you can add, delete and rename arpeggiator presets. Also, saving and loading of presets is supported making it easy to re-use custom arpeggiator presets in any project.

Arpeggiator in the sequencer

In the Sequencer, select a MIDI track and make sure the Object-bar is visible (select Object-bar from the options menu or press the 'o' key). You will find the arpeggiator in the Arp section.

To activate the arpeggio effect on MIDI tracks, just press the arpeggiator's power button in the object-bar. In addition you have a button for opening the arpeggiator editor, and a dropdown list for selecting the playback mode.

Arpeggiator in the Comp view

To add a arpeggiator in the Comps view, right-click and select Classic Arp from the popup menu.

Next you can route the MIDI from Master in into the Classic Arp, and then MIDI out from the Classic Arp into a VST instrument or the internal synthesizer.

When you play your MIDI keyboard, the notes will be transformed into a sequence of notes and then sent to the synthesizer. Using the VST version of energyXT, you can add arpeggiator effects to any other sequencers with VST support like Cubase, Live and FL Studio. Check it out!
